Martinez in Olympic protest
Comedian Francesca Martinez has refused to carry the Olympic torch in protest at China’s human rights abuses.
The stand-up, who has celebral palsy, was invited to carry the flame through London this weekend as part of the build-up to the Beijing games.
But she has now dropped out, because of China's treatment of Tibet.
Martinez – who has appeared in Grange Hill and Extras - told ITN: ‘I was very honoured to be asked, and very honoured to represent the disabled community.
‘I fully support the Tibetan cause and in a way I feel that, because of the mounting pressure and the ongoing violence in Tibet, that torch-bearers should turn down their role.’
Hundreds of protesters are expected to line the route when the torch passes through the capital on Sunday. Britain's number one badminton player Richard Vaughan has also refused to take part in the relay, but the 80 torch bearers will include former Blue Peter presenter Konnie Huq and Olympic gold medallists Dame Kelly Holmes, Tessa Sanderson and Duncan Goodhew.
In my humble opinion, the people who still try to say that sports and politics have nothing to do with each other and profess that the Olympics is somehow a way of bringing the world together, should maybe take another look at the Greek authorities kicking an punching a man to the ground. His crime? Carrying a flag with intent to wave. The Tibetans are being killed by a repressive hideous regime, which frankly the West is scared shitless of glossing it all over so some twat can get their 5 minutes of fame with a burning stick is abhorrent. So a great big Fuck You to Konnie Huq, Kelly Holmes, Tessa Sanderson and Duncan Goodhew.
